Chandini Gagana

Chandini Gagana is a Dalit trans leader, writer, and performer based in Karnataka, India. For over 15 years, she has championed the rights and visibility of individuals with unique sexual identities—such as Kothi, Hijra, Jogappa, and DoubleDecker—who have historically had limited representation within the broader LGBTQIA+ movement.

She leads Payana, a pioneering organization that has incubated 23 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) across 28 districts of Karnataka. These CBOs are now united through Sarathya, a state-level federation that collaborates with government institutions and universities to increase recognition, opportunity, and self-determination for people of diverse gender and sexual identities.

Through Payana, Chandini has also nurtured a creative platform for community-based performers, storytellers, photographers, and artists. These cultural leaders co-create original works that express the lived realities and wisdom of their communities. Altogether, her work has helped organize and empower over 10,000 individuals across the state.
