Chandini Gagana

ORA India 2025 Fellow

Bangalore, Karnataka

Project: Payana
Empowering persons of unique sexual identities to build organisations and strengthen ecosystems for rights, visibility and opportunities.

Chandini is a Dalit trans leader, writer, and performer. For over 15 years, she has been building the voice and visibility for individuals and communities of unique sexual identities, such as Kothi, Hijra, Jogappa, DoubleDecker, and others, who have had limited representation in the LGBTQIA+ sector.

Chandnini leads Payana, an organization that has incubated 23 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) of persons with unique sexual identities across 28 districts of Karnataka. She has further collectivized them into a state-level federation called Sarathya. Recognized as one of the first networks, Sarathya fosters dialogue and collaborations with the Karnataka state government and educational institutions to provide opportunities and agency for people with unique sexual identities.

Chandini has also created a springboard for performers, storytellers, photographers, and artists from within the communities of unique sexual identities who co-create productions and performances that emerge from their lives.

By mentoring grassroots CBOS, developing artists and cultural leaders, and creating a state-wide ecosystem, Chandini and her team have galvanized 10,000 members of the community of persons with unique sexual identities across Karnataka.

“This fellowship is a milestone in my journey ahead. It will open new pathways in my journey, help me understand challenges, and enhance my role in improving the community. This fellowship has opened new doors for me to explore different strategies for social engagement, and I look forward to applying my learnings to benefit my community. I am excited to stay connected and contribute in any way I can.”
