Jeferson Panche Chocue

Jeferson Panche Chocué, from the indigenous people of Nasa, was born and raised in the countryside, more specifically in the Guaico Alizal region, Cauca, Colombia. Since his early childhood, he wondered about the territory, dived into the crystalline waters of the Ovejas River, and became enchanted by the biological diversity around him. Enraptured by this, he decided to study Biology at Universidad del Valle, in Cali. At university, he worked with various zoology groups, with a special focus on the study of insects, the group he was most fond of. His quest took him to the Amazon, where he explored its rich biodiversity, making great contributions to science with his thorough description of new species. He learned about water quality bioindication and decided to continue with his academic training. In Bogotá, he got a master´s degree in Biological Science at Universidad de los Andes, but his heart remained embraced to his ancestral land, his most treasured shelter. His wish to bring together his academic knowledge with his ancestral heritage and his community’s knowledge led him to conceive the idea of Community Environmental Monitoring. His eagerness to work relentlessly to strengthen these processes in Abya Yala, by fostering the work of the genuine guardians of Mother Earth against the inevitable hostile and steamrolling model. He is committed to growing the seed of care, deeply rooted in the bond between science and ancestry, as an act of resistance against the destructive vortex threatening the globe.
