James Fahn is the global director of Internews’ environmental programs and the executive director of Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, a global community of more than 25,000 reporters covering environmental and climate issues. A journalist focused primarily on environmental, climate, and science reporting in low- and middle-income countries, he has also served as a lecturer at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, where he taught a graduate-level course on international environmental reporting for 11 years.
James has spent much of his career based in Asia, working as a reporter and editor for The Nation, an English-language daily newspaper in Bangkok, and hosting a Thai feature television show. His book, A Land on Fire, recounts the environmental issues and scandals he uncovered in Southeast Asia. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Scientific American, Newsweek, The Economist, The San Francisco Chronicle, and numerous other outlets.
He has held leadership and advisory roles across journalism and environmental networks, including serving on the Engagement Committee for Future Earth, managing Internews’ Myanmar country program, co-founding the Thai Society of Environmental Journalists, and working with the Ford Foundation. James has received UNEP’s Global 500 Award for environmental reporting and was recognized by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for his service to Thailand.
