James Ferreira Moura Junior is coordinating the ORA Research Grant focused on resistance and resilience amidst climate change and socio-environmental conflicts in Quilombo do Cumbe, NE Brazil.
He is a Fulbright scholar, Quilombista activist and professor in Brazil who teaches at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz and Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-brasileira. Fundação Oswaldo Cruz is a renowned Brazilian scientific research institution dedicated to public health. Established in 1900, it is a global leader in the field – its innovative health research has improved the lives of millions of people, particularly in developing countries, with projects like the development of a Yellow Fever vaccine. Ferreira Moura also teaches at Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-brasileira, a Brazilian-based university dedicated to social responsibility, addressing issues related to racial equality, poverty, and sustainable development.
James Ferreira Moura Junior is working on this project in collaboration with Joao do Cumbe, a Quilombola, Researcher, and Director of the Community Association of Quilombo do Cumbe, a Brazil-based nonprofit that advocates for the lifeways of the Quilombo do Cumbe. The Community Association of Quilombo do Cumbe works on community development and support for traditional lifeways, including sustainable fishing, local food production and other critical aspects of Quilombo traditional lifeways.
