From Crisis to Resilience

This video was produced by Emery Ndayizeye, an Omega Resilience Awards (ORA) 2024 Africa Fellow.

In 2017, Mbouyasse Magalie, had to leave her home country, the Central African Republic, after a traumatic experience. While travelling in the country, she was attacked by highway robbers and by chance she managed to escape. Her sister, who was living in Cameroon at the time, suggested that she migrate to Cameroon to forget the trauma she had experienced. When she arrived in Cameroon, she worked as a housekeeper to earn money to start her own business. After 1 year she started selling natural juice (folere) in Yaounde town, she was even able to start another income generating activity which is making and selling shoes and bags. These economic activities have enabled her to bring her daughter to Cameroon and send her to school. She says she doesn’t plan to return to her home country. The Cameroonian context encourages entrepreneurship. Her goal is to set up her own business here and to help and train other refugees to create economic activities.
